ENGL 335 Writing Project
Aims
The aims in ENGL 335 are that each student extends her/his technical and thematic creative writing skills, and
- To encourage experimentation within a genre or style of writing;
- To promote an understanding of the process of creative writing;
- To advance on writing techniques that the student had previously acquired;
- To encourage self-reflexive and critical thinking in relation to the student's own work.
Outcomes
At the completion of this subject, students are expected to:
- Have a clear understanding of the limits and possibilities of a variety of contemporary forms of creative writing;
- Have furthered their knowledge of Australian and international creative writing;
- Have demonstrated their development of creative, imaginative and fluent practices as emerging writers;
- Have developed their self-reflective, critical and editing skills;
- Have honed their skills in analysing and discussing the work of others in a workshop context.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
In Writing Project you are encouraged to reflect upon and interrogate your writing practises, to explore new methods in relation to craft and technique or genre, and to link this work to analysis of texts. The readings and discussions are structured so that the student can make productive links between these tasks and her or his own writing. Students work to achieve this through a regular writing and reading practice, and through meeting weekly in the writing workshop.
Class structure
- The unit is taught through a combination of seminar style lectures; workshopping of student work; discussion of the set readings; and oral presentations by the students about the readings.
- Students are expected to participate in group discussion; to read in advance; to undertake weekly writing of their own creative work; to complete in-class writing assignments; and to attend all classes, on time.
Relationship between Assessment and Learning Outcomes
Assessment tasks are designed to encourage students to develop writing skills through the inter-related practice of creative writing, reading, and discussion. The assessment tasks focus on these three skills and aim to develop them in inter-related ways.
